How the GMAT Focus Edition Is Scored
The GMAT Focus Edition uses a new scoring scale that differs from the original GMAT. Understanding how scores work helps you set realistic targets and measure your progress.
Total Score
In 10-point increments. Combines all three section scores into a single composite.
Section Scores
Each of the three sections receives its own score in 1-point increments.
GMAT Score Percentile Rankings
Percentiles indicate the percentage of test-takers you scored higher than. Here are the official GMAT Focus Edition percentiles for common total scores.

What GMAT Scores Do Top Business Schools Expect?
Admissions committees evaluate applications holistically, but a strong GMAT score is still one of the most important parts of an MBA application. Because the Focus Edition uses a new scale, scores look lower than on the classic GMAT: a classic 730 corresponds to roughly a 675–685 on the Focus Edition. Recent class profiles from two of the most selective programs:
- Harvard Business School (Class of 2027)685 median (middle 80%: 645–735)
- Stanford GSB (Class of 2027)689 average
As a rule of thumb, a Focus score in the high 600s makes you competitive at the most selective programs, while a 645 already beats about 86% of test-takers.
Figures are from each school's published Class of 2027 profile; many students now submit GRE or classic GMAT scores instead. Always check your target schools' latest class profiles.
Retakes, Score Validity & Answer Edits
Retake Limits
You can take the GMAT up to five times in any rolling 12-month period and eight times in total, with at least 16 days between attempts.
Five-Year Validity
GMAT scores remain valid for five years, so a strong score now covers applications for several admissions cycles.
Review & Edit
Within each section you can bookmark questions, review them at the end, and change up to three answers if time remains.

Identify Weaknesses
Take a diagnostic exam to find your weakest areas. Focused improvement on low-scoring sections yields the largest score gains.
Use Official Materials
Practice with official GMAC questions and exams. Third-party materials can supplement, but nothing replicates the real question style.
