GMAT Quantitative Reasoning

Master the math skills that drive your GMAT score

Quant Section

What Is the GMAT Quantitative Reasoning Section?

The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT Focus Edition contains 21 problem-solving questions to be completed in 45 minutes. It measures your ability to reason mathematically, solve quantitative problems, and interpret graphical data.

All questions are multiple-choice with five answer options. The section is computer-adaptive, meaning question difficulty adjusts based on your performance. A strong Quant score signals to admissions committees that you have the analytical skills required for MBA-level coursework.

Note: Data Sufficiency questions, which were previously part of the Quant section on the old GMAT, have been moved to the Data Insights section on the GMAT Focus Edition.

Strategies

Expert Quant Strategies from Dr. Donnelly

Pick Numbers Strategically

When variables appear in the answer choices, substituting smart numbers often reveals the correct answer faster than algebraic manipulation.

Work Backwards from Answers

For certain problem types, testing the answer choices — starting with the middle value — can be faster than solving from scratch.

Estimate When Possible

If answer choices are spread apart, approximation can save significant time. Train yourself to recognize when estimation is sufficient.

Master Time Management

You have roughly 2 minutes and 9 seconds per question. Use the bookmark feature to flag tough questions and return to them later.
